Modern outboard engines are incredibly reliable. Give them good fuel and a strong spark, and assuming you operate the outboard properly, things will rarely go wrong.
Service experts I have spoken with over the past few boating seasons agree that with the arrival of computer-controlled, emission-compliant fuel-injected four-stroke and direct-injection two-stroke engines over the last decade, the two most likely sources of outboard failure are fuel and battery-related.
Here are five tips to keep a well-running outboard motor performing strongly throughout this boating season.
1. Prioritize Fuel Maintenance:
Experts state that in many places, gasoline begins to oxidize in as little as two weeks. This means when you are not using the boat, a craft sitting idle in the marina for a few weekends may end up with gummed-up or clogged carburetors.
Follow these protocols when fueling your outboard-powered boat:
- To get the freshest fuel, purchase from busy gas stations or fuel docks.
- Avoid ethanol-blended gasoline whenever possible. Unless you plan to use the fuel within a few days, add a fuel stabilizer product (such as Seafoam, Stabil, or an OEM stabilizer) to every tank.
- If the boat will be parked for an extended period (more than a few weeks), add fresh stabilized fuel and fill the tank completely to prevent condensation from forming in the fuel.
2. Upgrade Your Fuel Filtration Equipment:
Your outboard may already have its own small fuel filter, but consider installing a separate fuel filter between the engine and the fuel tank, especially if you cannot avoid ethanol-blended fuels. Filters with replaceable cartridges can capture water and sticky substances that ethanol may wash out of the fuel delivery system. You will need a 10-micron filter sized appropriately for your engine's fuel pump capacity.
3. Careful Battery Usage and Maintenance:
- If your battery is several seasons old and you did not store it with a maintenance charger during the off-season, consider replacing it with a new one this year.
- Regularly check battery cable connections to ensure they are clean and tight, and ensure the battery is installed in a box or bracket that secures it to the boat. If your boat has a battery switch, turn it off after every outing to prevent accidental battery drain.
- If the boat will be idle for a long time and you have access to power, remove the battery and keep it fully charged with a maintenance charger.
4. Inspect All Engine Accessories:
- Dents and scratches on propeller blades can reduce performance and should be repaired by a qualified propeller shop. Bent blades can cause the propeller to lose balance, potentially leading to more costly failures.
- On smaller motors with tiller or cable steering, you might feel a bent blade as a new vibration in the tiller or steering wheel while underway, similar to feeling a car wheel out of balance.
- However, the hydraulic and power steering systems found on many newer, larger boats often mask this vibration. If left unaddressed, an unbalanced prop can cause the drive shaft to wobble, potentially leading to gear set failure or drive shaft seal leaks, which can also damage gears and bearings.
- When the boat is on a trailer or rack, you can inspect your blades by placing the motor in neutral (and please remove the kill switch) and rotating the prop. Remember, if you touch a soft bottom, you can bend a blade without necessarily roughening the edge. If in doubt, have the prop inspected at a shop.
5. Check Propeller Shaft and Seal Kit Before Heading Out:
- Professional engine technicians report that they find fishing line wrapped around the outboard propeller shaft at least once a week. Cord builds up between the propeller and the propeller shaft seal kit, and the thrust of the propeller forces the cord into the seals, causing them to fail.
- This allows water to enter the gearbox, damaging gears and bearings while you run across the lake, leading to repair costs reaching tens of thousands of NTD.
- With a few simple habits, you can pull the prop and check for fishing line on the shaft in about 15 minutes. It is the cheapest and simplest insurance practice. This is also a common consensus: please stop throwing old fishing line into the sea.
Why do experts prioritize choosing Honda engines in the market?
Players who enjoy recreational fishing value maritime safety above all else. Whether a voyage is safe depends largely on the stability of the vessel's power source. Being stranded at sea is a significant trouble, especially when the yacht is too large to paddle to shore, and maritime emergencies are difficult to resolve in time. This is why Honda Marine is the top choice for experts, thanks to the following points:
- Superior Performance
- High Reliability
- Amazing Technology Integration
- Lightweight Design
- Powerful Output
- Princess Yachts Taiwan officially became a HONDA MARINE Taiwan dealer at the end of 2022.
